Transcriptive alternative

Transcriptive is gone. The transcript workflow doesn't have to be.

Digital Anarchy discontinued Transcriptive Rough Cutter and PowerSearch on 1 May 2026. Verbatim is a panel for Premiere that does the same two jobs, search the transcript and cut from it, plus the one Transcriptive never had: describe the story and get the rough cut. It reads Premiere's own free transcripts, so there is no per-minute bill, and your footage never leaves your drive.

What happened to Transcriptive

For most of a decade, Transcriptive was the answer to "how do I search my footage by what was said, inside Premiere." Digital Anarchy's own notice now reads: the products affected are Transcriptive Rough Cutter, PowerSearch, the Transcriptive Web App and Eff-it, discontinued on 1 May 2026. In their words, "you'll no longer be able to transcribe with the Transcriptive panel." Prepaid credits can no longer be bought and yearly subscriptions won't renew. The panel you already installed keeps playing back the transcripts you already have, "as long as Adobe continues to support CEP panels."

That last clause matters. CEP is Adobe's older panel framework; Adobe's current plugin platform for Premiere is UXP, which is what Verbatim is built on.

What you did with Transcriptive, and what you do now

Transcribing

Transcriptive sent your media to its transcription service and billed per minute: $0.08 for Transcriptive A.I., $0.15 pay-as-you-go for AI Premium. Premiere has had its own transcription since 2021. It runs on your machine, it is free, and it is what Verbatim reads. Select the clips, open the Text panel, press Transcribe, and the transcript shows up in Verbatim's INPUT tab with each speaker in their own colour.

Finding the line

PowerSearch was a keyword search across the transcripts, markers and metadata in a project. Verbatim's FIND does the keyword part, matching exact words as you type and jumping the playhead to each hit. Then there is the part PowerSearch could not do: switch to AI search and describe the moment instead. "The part where she admits the first version failed" finds the line even when none of those words were said. Interviewer questions are detected and listed, so you can jump question by question through a long interview.

Making the cut

Rough Cutter's model was subtraction: delete text in the transcript, and the matching video disappeared from the sequence. Verbatim works in both directions. Click a line to take all of it, or drag across the words you want, and + Add to Timeline puts that quote on the output sequence as its own clip, cut at word boundaries. Or skip the hunting entirely: open Build Narrative, describe who you want to hear from, the beats to hit and roughly how long it should run, and the editor proposes a cut and explains each choice. Reorder or drop beats, keep part of a quote, and approve. Exactly that cut lands on the timeline, with the input clips' Motion, Lumetri and audio settings carried over.

Fixing it later

Every clip on the output sequence is a story card. Drag a card and the timeline reorders; delete one and the gap closes; right-click a word to split. Verbatim's own undo covers every one of those edits, including a whole build. If the story changes, Refine reopens the same conversation on a cut that is already built and applies only the differences.

Moving over

  1. Keep your captions. Anything you exported from Transcriptive as SRT or captions still imports into Premiere as a caption track.
  2. Re-transcribe in Premiere. Verbatim reads Premiere's transcript, not Transcriptive's. Premiere transcribes an hour of interview in a few minutes, locally, for free.
  3. Install Verbatim. One notarized installer, a two-minute setup, and the panel appears under Window → Extensions. The install guide walks through it.
  4. Pick how you pay for AI. Cinelore Cloud ($9/mo, 14-day free trial) includes it. Verbatim Perpetual ($79 once) uses your own AI: your ChatGPT subscription, a free Gemini key, a Claude API key, or free offline AI on your Mac (Ollama) if you want nothing to leave the machine.

Who should not switch

  • Windows editors. Verbatim is macOS-only today.
  • Resolve or Avid shops. Verbatim is Premiere only; DaVinci Resolve support is in development.
  • If PowerSearch's marker and metadata search was the main thing. Verbatim searches transcripts, not markers or clip metadata.

Questions

+Is Transcriptive really discontinued?

Yes. Digital Anarchy's notice says Transcriptive Rough Cutter, PowerSearch, the Transcriptive Web App and Eff-it were discontinued on 1 May 2026. You can no longer transcribe with the panel or buy prepaid minutes; existing panels keep working only as long as Adobe supports CEP panels.

+Can Verbatim read my old Transcriptive transcripts?

Verbatim reads the transcript Premiere makes in its own Text panel, so the practical path is to re-transcribe in Premiere (free, built in, a few minutes per hour of footage). Captions you exported from Transcriptive can still be imported into Premiere as caption tracks.

+Does Verbatim charge per minute of transcription?

No. Transcription is Premiere's, and Premiere's is free. You pay Cinelore either $9 a month with the AI included, or $79 once and use your own AI.

+Does Verbatim run on Windows?

Not yet. Verbatim is macOS-only today, and Premiere only (DaVinci Resolve is in development). If you cut on Windows, Verbatim is not your answer this year.

Try it on your own interviews.

14-day free trial. Install the panel, select your clips, describe the cut. Your footage stays on your drive.
